Welsh history and achievements to glory in rather than grizzle about. What have we Welsh ever given to the world? For starters, mail order, sleeping bags, essential features of the internet, the first powered flight, presidents, prime ministers and Nobel prize-winners. People of Welsh stock have helped shape the culture and constitution of the United States; they have enriched British culture by wondrous writing, acting, painting, poetry, singing and architecture; the sporting achievements of Welsh people are totally disproportionate to the Welsh contribution to world population. Welsh history should be rewritten in a way that does not dwell on perceived oppression, exploitation, grievance, rebellion and poverty, but rather in a way that makes us proud of our achievements and aspire towards the sure triumphs of the future. AUTHORS: Chris Butler has been special adviser to the Secretary of State for Wales and has served as an MP in Warrington. Virginia Butler is a keen genealogist and is Museum Officer Manager at the Royal Mint Museum. The Welsh-born brother and sister team have joined forces here to share their pride in Welsh history. 16 b/w illustrations
