In 3 x 3, the recent work of Seattle-based architecture firm of Suyama Peterson Deguchi, is broken down into a case study of three recently constructed residences. Sharing inherent architectonic characteristics and employing similar design philosophies, these homes are tested on three different kinds of sites and topographies: a remote island getaway, perched high along a rocky bluff affording ?big? views of the archipelago below; a long and narrow site in a historic beach community on Puget Sound; and a site situated on a golf course fairway, surrounded by homes built in more traditional styles. George Suyama FAIA, founded Seattle-based George Suyama Architects in 1971 (renamed Suyama Peterson Deguchi in 2003) and quickly became know for innovative designs that draw from the rich traditions of Japanese and Northwest Contemporary architecture. The hallmark of their internationally published and awarded work is its mastery of scale and proportion, sophisticated detailing and restrained material palette. SPD brings together the site and the building, the materials and the details to create enduring architecture that reveals elemental truths about nature, people and architecture. With complete sets of drawings, photographs, and text, 3 x 3 documents the Firm's pursuit of timeless and elegant design that established their reputation as one of the leading architecture firms in the Pacific Northwest.
