1975-1999
This book traces the history and development of cricket's World Cup, from its first tentative steps to the mammoth and wonderful event it has become. Each and every game is chronicled, but this is a story that goes far beyond the statistics.
Despite the surplus of Limited-Over tournaments in international cricket, there is one event that needs no tampering to increase its value to anyone watching or playing in it. The World Cup established its unchallenged pre-eminence as the premier Limited-Over cricket event from its inception a quarter of a century ago. Over the gorgeously sunny two weeks in England in June 1975, Limited-Over, or One-Day International cricket silenced all doubters as it showed itself to be an exciting, meaningful part of the grand old game.
Each of the succeeding World Cup tournaments has developed its own character, personalities, atmosphere, records, controversy, upsets, thrills and spills, and brilliant cricket. Teams and individuals have become heroes and villains, often within days of one another.
Although only a quarter of a century old, World Cup cricket is already one of the most valued traditions in world sport.
