Archaeologist Emma Fielding has just packed up her faithful, beat-up Civic, kissed her husband goodbye, and driven from her home in Northern Massachusetts to the Berkshire foothills, where the opportunity of a lifetime awaits.
The newest Fellow at the Shrewsbury Foundation, Emma plans to spend the next month researching the life of Margaret Chandler, an 18th century woman whose diary promises to shed new light on the excavation of Chandler's home which she'd completed only months before. But the other Shrewsbury Fellows are an odd bunch - from a brandy-slugging professor named Jack to a bitter divorcee named Faith who unexpectedly reveals her sad life story to Emma.
Suddenly uncomfortable in her new surroundings, Emma finds solace only in her research, the library, and daily runs in the spectacular surrounding mountains. But when she stumbles across Faith's dead body on one of her jogs, she knows that even the silent confines of the library aren't safe from murder. And when the killer soon comes after Emma, the brilliant archeologist must run for her life - literally - before she becomes a footnote in a very chilling, three-decades old story.
