Emma Baines is a duchess, newly widowed, and not eager to marry again. On the same night she's informed that her uncle has found another husband for her, she's kidnapped by Ian McNair, who believes she has something called the Tulloch Sgàthán. (The Tulloch mirror.)
The few days Emma spends in Ian's presence teach her that those years of her marriage haven't dampened her passion. Ian, however, is to be married, just as she is, and he returns her to her home.
Emma is married, and Gilbert, her new husband, insists on traveling to Scotland to show off his heiress bride. His life is in danger, however, and when he arrives at his cousin's home -- Ian's home -- Gilbert is near death. As Emma and Ian work to save Gilbert, they also work to overcome their feelings for each other. Added to the emotional complication is the mystery of who wanted Gilbert dead, and the secret Emma holds about her years of marriage to the Duchess of Herridge.
When Gilbert dies, Emma returns to London, only to nearly die herself at the hands of her uncle. She realizes that she is foolish to overlook the possibility of happiness and she and Ian plan for a life together.
