This is the story of a decent, honest and God-fearing man burdened throughout his life by a guilty secret. He tries to hide it from the world, his Church, his family and friends, and even himself. The unacceptable truth that he is gay.
Not the end of the world, you might think, but for a man whose calling is to the Church, it turns out to be a nightmare. An exorcism, a stint in the defence forces and a miserable double life at Bible College punctuated by sordid sex in the back of cars with strange men culminates in an attempted suicide.
Seemingly incurably gay, the Anglican Church despatches him to a "rehabilitation centre" where inmates are subjected to intimidation, humiliation and during "counselling" sessions sometimes bashed.
This emotional roller coaster is a damning indictment on the Church's attitude towards homosexuality. It is a heartfelt story of a man that undergoes betrayal, heartbreak, and cynicism and yet somehow comes out of it all with as pure a heart as he began. His journey is ultimately uplifting and encouraging. Its universal appeal lies in its humanity and courage.
