When Isabel tells her husband she is pregnant she expects a degree of resistance. Yes, the baby is a bit of a surprise - completely unexpected in fact. Yes, she isn't exactly young any more. And yes, her two children are nearly grown up. But forty is not so very old. It's not as though they are short of money, and their marriage is strong, isn't it?
But on the day she tells her husband, he is steeling himself to deliver a much bigger surprise: he has been having an affair with a much younger woman, and he is about to leave her. As Isabel turns to her friends for support, she finds that her own change in circumstances seems to have a domino effect on all those around her.
