Leaving the town of Mitford - even temporarily - is a huge upheaval for newly retired Father Tim and his wife Cynthia; it means saying goodbye to close friends and parishioners and starting a whole new life. As Father Tim heads for Whitecap Island to take up the position of interim priest of the tiny parish of St John's, he struggles with a gripping question: How can he abandon all the people who've come to depend on him in Mitford? After an unsettling arrival, Father Tim and Cynthia soon find that Whitecap has its own unforgettable characters: a lovelorn bachelor placing personal ads, a mysterious neighbour and gifted musician who never ventures outside his walled estate, and a young mother battling paralyzing depression. While Father Tim pours himself into the daily life of his parish, Cynthia pours herself - and her heart - into someone she will eventually lose. They also find that Mitford is never far away as their phone constantly rings with news from back home - especially when Dooley ends up on the wrong side of the law.
