One cold February morning a young woman's body is found in one of the "garderobes" amid the ancient Roman ruins of Old Sarum, a few miles from Stonehenge - the apparent victim of an accidental fall.
In the Tate Gallery in London an elderly woman has collapsed in front of a famous portrait - from a supposed heart attack. And the body of an elderly tapister is found in the nave of Exeter Cathedral - dead, it is presumed, from natural causes.
They are ostensibly unsuspicious, unrelated deaths. But when Scotland Yard Chief Superintendent Richard Jury joins forces with Divisional Commander Brian Macalvie and aristocratic amateur sleuth Melrose Plant they discover that beneath the external appearance of innocent death, there may be a stronger - more sinister - connection. A tenuous link between the three women takes Jury all the way to Santa Fe, where the key to the puzzle is seven random numbers - and the person who can unlock it is an unconventional teenager and her coyote.
