January 1943. The naval war in the North Atlantic is at its deadliest, but the everyday crimes of murder, arson, theft and fraud continue to tax the overworked detectives St-Cyr and Kohler. A body has been found, covered by a shabby square of faded, wine-red sail cloth. The victim is a shopkeeper. The suspect, a U-boat Kapitan, a hero and protege of Admiral Doenitz, and a dollmaker whose grandfather was famous for it. The motive, a matter of 300,000 marks. Or is it? And was there a third person at the murder scene? As they tackle the investigation, St-Cyr and Kohler are transported into a nightmare of suspicion, greed and revenge.
