In occupied France during World War II, the pairing of Jean-Louis St-Cyr of the Surete and Gestapo Oberdetektiv Hermann Kohler seems mismatched and uneasy. It's just that they've been successful in the past.
St-Cyr and Kohler are shipped hastily from Paris to Avignon to investigate the violent death of a young woman in the Palais des Papes. The dead girl is a scion of a long-fallen aristocratic family and scholar of medieval history. She is also a singer who is desperate to join the madrigal group in the town, for whom she already designs and make costumes.
After much self doubt, fear and another death, St-Cyr is only able to discover the truth with the help of a complex coded journal left behind by the victim.
Strong on local colour, noir atmospherics and historical detail, 'Madrigal' is the latest in the series of St-Cyr and Kohler mysteries. It is a complex mix of politics, sex, drugs and professional jealousy in an authentic and credible setting.
