A Sunday in Hell is a breath-taking documentary about the 1976 Paris-Roubaix Classic, made by the celebrated Danish director Jorgen Leth. Leth's mission was to capture the spirit of this spectacular and cruel one-day race through the cobbled roads of northern France, unnervingly known as the Hell of the North. The film centres around legends of the sport including Eddy Merckx, Roger de Vlaeminck, Freddy Maertens and Francesco Moser, capturing not just their experience of the race, but also the mood of a nation and its relationship with the most demanding of Spring Classics. Leth did so using revolutionary camera and sound techniques which enhanced the experience of watching cycling on screen forever.
This book looks at the men, the method and the places behind the film- Leth, his work, and his collaborators, and the cyclists such as Merckx, De Vlaeminck and the ill-fated winner Marc Demeyer, revisiting locations which have changed little to this day.
