'A Workbook in Phonology' has been written as an accompanying volume to the coursebook 'A Course in Phonology', in order to provide readers with further exercise material. Because of that, references are made to chapters and sections of 'A Course in Phonology', throughout the text and systematically in the Exercise Cross-Reference Table. Despite this, this workbook is a self-contained work, and may be used in conjunction with other teaching books or by itself.
The 140 exercises contained in this book are organised in blocks corresponding to the sections of 'A Course in Phonology'. As far as is possible, the exercises are arranged in order of difficulty within each block. The first section contains exercises in phonetics and, in particular, transcription exercises aimed at giving a good grounding in the IPA alphabet. The second section covers the first four phonology chapters of 'A Course in Phonology', and provides practice in the manipulation of phonological data.
Subsequent sections, again corresponding to the sections of Chapter 20 of 'A Course in Phonology' offer practice in syllables, stress, stone, the phonology/morphology interface, phonological domains, features and underspecification, and derivational theory. The final section of the book contains exercises in Optimality Theory.
Suitable for beginning students of phonology and phonetics.
