Adam is one of the children rescued from the continents ravaged by the wars when the computers turned on the men controlling them. It is twenty-second century Earth. Adam lives in a Tower where he is studying for citizenship of Lemuria. If he fails, he will be returned to his homeland. Evelyn is in his class. She possesses her own, strictly illegal, Artificially Intelligent computer and is determined to escape from the school to one of the Sanctuaries ruled by computers. When Adam fails his exams, she enlists his aid in constructing an old-fashioned flying machine she had discovered while using a Viruto-beds. Together they fly across a dry, desolate continent until they reach the starship which will transport them to a new world.
