Ex-detective Harlan Donnally has been content running his small café in Northern California ever since he was shot on the job almost ten years ago. But then a dying friend asks Donnally to track down his long-lost sister and deliver a message, and Donnally soon finds his world turned upside down. Turns out the sister was killed decades ago for knowing too much about the wrong things, her alleged killer was never prosecuted, and there are people still alive who would kill again to make sure that what the sister knew never comes to light.
Wanting to stay uninvolved, but unable to let injustice endure, Donnally allows himself to be pulled into a nightmare world of which the sister's death only scratched the surface. And as he searches for the truth, each layer he peels back reveals a reality far more disturbing than the last: from a broken legal system to a series of murders somehow connected to a 1970s Berkeley commune to a network of church corruption and finally to a sex trafficking ring backed by very powerful people in Mexico. And before it's all over, Donnally, who has his own demons to battle, will find out just how far he is willing to go to deliver long overdue justice.
