The history of Africa is most simply defined by its relationships with other parts of the world. These relationships have shaped Africa itself and determined its place in the modern world. The book explores the first African kingdoms of Egypt, the influence of the ancient Mediterranean, the role of Islam in medieval Africa, the influence of Asia, and, more recently, the impact of European colonisation, the slave trade and the birth of globalisation.

What we chose to look at, and the way in which we react to other cultures, is coloured by our own cultural identity. These reactions come into play when we construct a notion of a continent or culture. In dealing with themes such as the legacy of slavery, the popularity of African art, and the Africa diaspora, the author encourages the reader to consider the possible preconceptions that come with one's own cultural heritage. The result is a book which enthuses the reader to look afresh at Africa, its peoples and culture.
