1817. Having reached the age of thirty, Lydia Templeton is of the opinion that affairs of the heart need no longer trouble her. Her love life ended ten years ago when she turned down the most eligible man in the country, Lewis Durrant, and she has been content with being just friends with him, and no more, since. Content with spinsterhood, she turns her attention to her Godmother’s ward, Phoebe, who must be found a suitor. This task does not prove a simple one, however, and takes a particularly alarming turn when Phoebe meets Lewis Durrant’s nephew, Hugo. The young couple take a fancy to each other and, to Lydia and Durrant’s horror, end up running away together. Both Lydia and Durrant feel responsible for this unfortunate state of affairs, and together they vow to remedy it. In the process, however, they might just find that they must be honest with each other at last.
