Ancient Wonderings tells a tale of stepping into the past, of journeying across Britain's wildest lands on a trail of prehistoric worlds. James Canton immerses himself into the landscape, chasing physical obsessions of prehistory: stone circles, flint arrowheads, sacred stones, gold, tin, and a lost Roman road. He explores those wonders of the natural world which occupied ancient minds: the night sky, shooting stars, the rising and setting sun. And he wanders to the furthest reaches of our islands to seek those intangible teasings left by our ancestors: an undeciphered Pictish stone north of Aberdeen; first footsteps on the edge of an Ice Age land in the North Sea.The shadows of prehistory are not so far from our modern world. Our minds are very similar to the minds of our ancestors who lived on these same lands thousands of years before us. By going to the places where the ancient past was still most visible and then tucking down away from the present world and digging down within, we begin to realise what it is, what it has ever been, to be human.
