Antarctica is a unique photo book in which Jan Vermeer stunningly reawakens us to the white world of Antarctica. The book forms an impressive photographic documentary of Vermeer's visits to this extraordinary area. In Antarctica 250 photographs bear witness to the vastness of the landscape and the multiplicity of life that is found there. The accompanying texts tell the story of the expeditions made over the last 1400 years. Jan Vermeer has been a full-time professional photographer for more than 10 years. Nature is his greatest source of inspiration - Jan can therefore often be found in his 'big backyard', the natural surroundings of the Veluwe. Vermeer's work has been published in magazines such as Panda, Natuurbehoud, National Geographic, Traveler and KLM Holland Herald. A number of calendars featuring his work are published every year. His photographs have won many prestigious international awards. In 2006 he won first prize in the Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year Contest, with a photo of a crab taken on Aldabra and second prize with a photo of Japanese cranes. His has also won BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year several times.
