This book reproduces more than 200 fascinating pictures that illustrate the history of Uttoxeter and the surrounding villages of Denstone, Leigh, Marchington and Rochester. Many of the images come from the area's most important early photographers most of which have never been reproduced in print before.
Uttoxeter's history is examined by looking at the interesting changes that can be seen in local establishments such as schools and churches, and also by looking at the area's social life. This social life is illustrated by pictures of events such as annual carnivals and special occasions such as the Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary.
Perhaps the two most notable features of modern Uttoxeter are the JCB firm that originated from J.C. Bamford's first factory in the 1950s and the racecourse that has developed through the twentieth century to become one of the nation's finest. The history of JCB and the racecourse is extremely well illustrated in this book and can be found with pictures of other local businesses.
The images will bring back memories for some people while introducing local history to a new group of people who have not had the fortune to experience it yet.
Roy Lewis has compiled this book with help from local collections including the County Museum in Shugborough, the Uttoxeter Heritage Centre, the Staffordshire County Council Quality Learning Services Educational Support Unit and private collectors.
