Ten-year-old Jody can hardly believe his eyes when his father presents him with his own pony, a red colt which he names Gabilan after the grand Californian mountains that surround the isolated ranch.
Although, like most of his father's presents, the colt comes with certain conditions, the boy is proud and eager to work hard for his spirited new charge. But even Jody's stern upbringing fails to prepare him for the bitter and unexpected realities of life.
'The Red Pony' tells the story of a young boy growing in wisdom and understanding through his experience of loss.
