Morrow is at a loose end when, separately, two people beckon him up the stairs of an empty Dublin house. One offers work of a dubious kind: a property developer called Morden wants Morrow to authenticate some paintings. The other, also odd, offers a kind of love. 'Athena' is a love letter to Morrow's passions, to love, to art, and to the paintings he examines: works on classical themes, in which a moment's obsession, lust, loss and magic are preserved for ever.
