"Cooh-plus" is not a being, but a new material of stunning optical properties which show up as strong rays of pure colours, varying with the slightest movement of the viewer. Sheridan, the charismatic post-graduate student, deliberately misrepresents it as Coohplus, the material form of an entity with psychic abilities.
As a game - just a joke, at first - he claims it has miraculous powers. A cult has its beginnings. People who need the reassurance Coohplus gives, through Sheridan as its mouthpiece, are desperate to believe. Janie is one of them . . .
Marie, the lab technician, feels very protective towards Janie but adores Sheridan. So she watches and does nothing to stop Janie's growing belief.
Sheridan is overtaken as leader by Ilona, who can see the financial possibilities in exploiting this growing community of believers. Janie, convinced it is essential for the Coohplus Movement, attempts to seduce Sheridan. After a disastrous sexual encounter, she takes pills and alcohol and rings Marie, whose domineering mother convinces her not to go to Janie's aid. Janie dies. The game is over and the scientists try to stop the new movement.
Marie now believes you can't fight lies with the truth. But you can fight lies. Driven by remorse, she is determined to avenge the death of fifteen-year-old Janie, even if it costs her her life.
