When the ineffectual Dr Proudie is appointed as Bishop of Barchester, in-fighting and resentment ripple through the diocese. The popular Archdeacon Grantly is determined to reassert his control, but to do that he has to contend with Mrs Proudie, the Bishop's domineering wife and her sidekick, the oily chaplain Mr Slope. When the political manoeuvering results in the Stanhope family being summoned back to Barchester, Mr Slope is presented with a dilemma.
