Graham Hendrick, an historian, has left his disagreeable wife Barbara for the more agreeable Ann, and is well pleased with the exchange. He can hardly believe his luck, and spends his time dwelling on her and listing what she is wearing in a notebook.
This blissful state continues until the day he catches her committing adultery on celluloid. Ann was, sometime before they married, a mediocre film actress.
Soon he is pouncing on small clues, examining her books for inscriptions of bygone lovers and continually re-seeing the few bad movies she appeared in.
It's not that he blames Ann for having a past before they met, but history matters to him . . .
Funny, sad and faintly ominous, Barnes makes jealousy tangible and dangerous.
