A new baby is born in Tranter's End and Old Noshie and Skirty Marm are godparents. Of course this makes their godson a very special baby indeed.
To mark the occasion the witches give him a remarkable gift. Unfortunately trouble is lurking just around the corner when a mysterious stranger moves in to the village and Mendax the cat disappears. Old Noshie and Skirty Marm soon discover that the newcomer is none other than Mrs Abercrombie, the exiled Queen of Witch Island. She is holding Mendax hostage until she can get back the Power Hat and become Queen once more . . .
