On learning that his grandfather was murdered, he takes his father's old dog and sets off for the place where it happened, the fishing village of Garopaba.
The villagers there seem resistant and hostile to his enquiries. It is not only his questions that upset them. His affliction - he is face blind, unable to recognize the people he knows or has met before - causes misunderstandings and trouble. But he can't stop.
