While shepherding his friend Tyron through a summer basketball camp, T. J. Nucci has his eyes opened to the dark side of college recruitment. T.J. wants to help Tyron stay focused and motivated long enough to get a scholarship for a good program. But when coaches, street agents, and even other players flaunt the rules of recruiting, T.J. feels disgusted with the process. Seeking refuge outside the camp, he meets LuAnn, a member of a Bible cult nearby. Later, when he learns of LuAnn's tragic fate and meets the cult's leader, T.J. sees the parallels between big-time sports and cult-like religion and realizes that the best way to help people is to teach them to think for themselves.
