Every day children are exposed to bacteria, viruses and other bugs ready to test their immune systems. Children and especially young children are more susceptible to infections; their immune systems have had little experience in fighting bugs and are slower to start their defences. Children also often come into close contact with other children carrying infections.
Whether or not a child exposed to an infection will get sick depends on the child's immunity and the current state of their immune system. Here nutrition plays a major part. Imbalances and deficiencies of certain nutrients can manifest themselves in frequent colds, flus and even chronic fatigue. Dietician Anna Niec-Oszwya discusses the interaction of nutrients with the immune system and relates this to children's immunity and their special needs in times of growth and development. She also provides healthy recipes and meal plans to get children back on their feet and to beat those germs.
