'Borderland' is a trilogy comprising 'Re-Entry', 'Jihad' and 'Camaleer'.
Borderland is Jaime Richard's journey into a new world: her own culture. Although she feels as though she lives in a borderland between two countries and cultures, she learns to choose to be herself in whichever place she finds herself.
'Re-Entry'
Jaime returns to Adelaide after being brought up in Pakistan. She finds fitting in difficult as she comes to grips with the culture shock and the new world.
While working out what to wear, how to talk to the kids at school, and how to navigate the perilous waters of dating Jaime resorts to writing a fictitious adventure story about Pakistan to sort out her feelings. When a crisis does occur where she is involved in a racial bust up in the city, she finds the strength to cope and not lose the valuable ground she has gained.
'Jihad'
Jaime goes back to Pakistan to see her friends. While it is reported to be safe there, Jaime is mistakenly kidnapped, and her friends must try to find her. Jaime's holiday turns into an adventure in war torn Afghanistan, and her struggle to escape results in joy and tragedy.
Jaime eventually says goodbye to Pakistan and tries to lay to rest the ghosts that have haunted her from the past. She is happy to live in a borderland but will try not to fall in the crack between the two cultures.
'Camaleer'
Jaime goes to the Far North to stay at her friend Blake's family station. Even the Far North is like a different culture to Jaime, but she learns to fit in. After 18 months in Australia, she is beginning to feel at home, even though she feels she may always walk in the borderland.
