Destroyer escorts were built in greater numbers than any other kind of Allied fighting ship during World War II, and more than 100,000 British and American sailors served aboard them. Deployed to protect Allied supply lines against German and Japanese attacks, by the war's end destoyer escorts had sunk more enemy submarines than any other kind of escort vessel. Designed in America, they served in both the Atlantic and the Pacific and provided the greatest number of warships to the Royal Navy through lend-lease.
