In 1860 a costly expedition set out from Melbourne across the inhospitable plains of Australia to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Robert O'Hara Burke was chosen to lead the expedition; William John Wills became his second in command. But the expedition was plagued with disasters - from the choice of Burke as leader to the tragedy of missing the support party at Coopers Creek by just nine hours.
