Arlie's face was disfigured by burns when a meth lab exploded. After that, Arlie discovered the street smarts and survival skills she needed to shelter her addict mother, since the law and Lloyd, her deranged, meth-addict stepfather, are both looking for them. But Arlie's carefully constructed world is ripped apart just after Arlie's sixteenth birthday when her mother commits suicide. Arlie can no longer hide when Social Services steps in and forces her to live with an uncle she didn't know she had and go to school, something she's never done. Just when Arlie begins to think a normal life might be possible, Lloyd shows up looking for money and flips her new life on its head.
