On 10 May, 1940 Hitler launched his war in the West. France and her armies reeled under the hammer of blitzkrieg. Within four days, German panzer formations had emerged from the apparently impassable Ardennes and established three bridgeheads across the Meuse. Soon they were to smash a 50-mile breach in the Allied line. Further to the north, Gort's British Expeditionary Force fared little better. Pushed onto the defensive, it was forced to retreat to Dunkirk and await evacuation.

By 22 June, despite fierce last-ditch resistance from some French units, the Battle of France was over. The Wehrmacht had won an astonishing victory. France's army, for 20 years the most powerful and respected in Europe, had been out-thought and out-fought. It was an unprecedented disaster, and the only occasion in the Second World War when a great power was defeated in the course of a single campaign.

This is the gripping story of the six weeks that decided the fate of a nation.
