Chartres, 1145. A town still recovering from a devastating fire ten years before - a fire believed to have been started deliberately, although the culprit was never found.
The Chevalier Galeran de Lesnevan has been summoned to investigate a new mystery, and uses the opportunity to visit his friend, a master glazier, in Chartres. While hundreds of craftsmen, artisans and workers painstakingly rebuild the cathedral for the glory of God, Galeran lives among them, drawn into the life of the town - and enchanted by the enigmatic physician Dame Ausanne.
When a murdered body is discovered in the river, a series of events leads Galeran to believe that the perpetrator of the fire is still at large in the area. And Galeran is determined to solve the ten-year-old crime - with consequences even he could not predict . . .
