In the sultry heat of an uncommonly hot English summer, young Prue Pagan heads north to take up a holiday job at Mountjoy Castle. Newly released from the confines of her convent school, she tastes the pleasures - and dangers - of her new position with innocent abandon. At nearby Midwinter Hall, Prue's more worldly friend Cleo is also working for the summer, in the employ of a famous cellist. While Prue is stalked by Lord Mountjoy's irascible heir, Cleo pursues her own quarry in typically uninhibited fashion. Nothing is quite what it seems, however, and many secrets lie hidden between castle, hall and village. By the time the summer is out so are most of the secrets, and Prue is not the only one wiser in the ways of the world.
