When war is declared, Sally, Grace and twins Daisy and Rose are desperate to do their bit for the war effort. Their hometown of Dartford in Kent will be in the frontline of Britain's defences against the Germans and the girls will need to draw on all of their resources if they are to hold their own.
Orphan Grace is desperate to escape her unhappy home life, so when war breaks out, she wastes no time in enlisting in the Women's Land Army, where she hopes her green fingers will be of use. But Grace finds that far from escaping her woes, her loyalties are about to be tested to their limit. For her, life will never be the same again...
