Twelve-year-old Clovermead Wickward lives with her father, the Innkeeper Waxmelt Wickward, in a small Vale, but she feels stunted by the lack of companionship and longs for adventure. One day, a travelling pilgrim stumbles upon her father's inn and, in return for food and lodgings, teaches her how to fight. As she becomes aware of unexplained powers within her, Clovermead begins to understand that she's been deceived her entire life: while she has always believed her mother died at childbirth and that her father moved far from his home to escape her memory, she now realises that the story she has longed to believe cannot be true.
Worst of all, her father refuses to tell her even a part of the truth that lies buried in the past. At the same time, away from the quiet of the Vale, an epic battle is being forged between the evil bear priests of Lord Ursus, a dark, powerful and terrible creature whose powers are fed by blood, and the good nuns of Lady Moon. Into this war, Clovermead and Waxmelt will be thrust, and the secrets of the past will become the key to victory for both sides.
