Danny's problems begin the day he finds an emu egg in the scrub beyond the town and takes it home. He is determined to hatch the little emu chick, but will he be able to keep the egg warm and alive? And can he keep it safe from Hacker, the school bully?
Everything seems to go wrong, but Danny refuses to give in. He has a dream - a dream about a little emu hatching out in the house and growing up in the yard as a friendly pet, staying of its own free will.
Hacker, of course, has other plans. The afternoon before the pet show at the school's Open Day, he steals the egg - and releases a hungry goanna from its cage. Somehow Danny has to outwit the bully and save the egg - fast!
