Hercule Poirot is on holiday in Jerusalem. One evening, through his hotel window, he hears someone say 'You see, don't you, that she has got to be killed'. Who has said these words? Poirot isn't sure, but later he recognises the voice. It belongs to the son of the very controlling and unpleasant Mrs Boynton.
Poirot and his fellow hotel guests, move on to the ancient city of Petra for the second part of their holiday. One afternoon, old Mrs Boynton dies suddenly. Is this a natural death: a weak heart and too much hot sun? Or does the tiny mark on her arm show that one of her many enemies gave her a fatal injection? Hercule Poirot has only 24 hours to solve the mystery.
