Daniel Connor, a brilliant medical student, leaves Edinburgh for Paris in the wake of Napoleon's surrender. Travelling by mail coach, with rare specimens and a letter of introduction to secure his future, he encounters a striking woman with heretical ideas on evolution. But when Daniel awakes, the woman has disappeared, taking his precious gifts with her. Descending in Paris, his dreams in tatters but intoxicated by new-found freedom, he learns the woman is Lucienne Bernard, a bohemian, philosopher and thief-on-the-run.
