Philip Holden was a great outdoorsman, whose writing explored the heart of rural New Zealand. When Philip passed away in 2005, he had written 57 books, many of them New Zealand classics. COUNTRY TALES FROM A KIWI LEGEND collects his most-loved writing, spanning his long career as a chronicler of a beautiful country. Philip Holden was born in Wales. He immigrated to New Zealand at the age of 21 after reading about positions available as a 'Government Hunter'. For seven years he became a professional hunter working in remote areas of the North and South Islands and the experiences gained over this time became the inspiration for his earlier works. His first book Pack and Rifle went on to become one of New Zealand's classic hunting yarns. Philip later gave up hunting in order to photograph and write about the land and its people. 'Station Country' is his most popular series from this time, telling the stories of the men and women who make a living off the beautiful yet isolated back country.
