Penelope (not Penny!) and Benny from The Three-Pronged Dagger and The Wandering Icon have another mystery to solve.
The whole school has been warned not to go near the ruined and partly burned old Harrison house, which is locally reputed to be haunted. Half the school is convinced that it really is haunted, and the teachers are concerned about the danger. The house continues out of bounds and several people have been caught near it. But who manages to get into the old house without being seen? And why?
