When Vida's great-aunt Petronella dies, aged 86, she leaves a poem called, 'Dawn Hawk', newspaper clippings concerning the WWII robbery of an American Army payroll, and some quarter-million dollars.

When the Wright Brothers immortalised themselves at Kittyhawk, they went on to make commercial aircraft. Two were "floatplanes", called Hawks, and at least one was sold in New Zealand and then disappeared from official records. This part of the story is true; 'Dawn Hawk' is exciting fiction.

Had Petronella discovered the Hawk? Was she restoring it? The retired colonel who runs the local museum says, no; the Hawk was put into one of several underground bunkers that were destroyed at the end of the war. Mark and Vida aren't convinced, and through their search we meet some wonderful characters.
