When Viola Otway arrives at Inskip Park, a huge house in Nottinghamshire with a facade that would have made Palladio faint and domes like Brighton Pavilion, she is enchanted. Young, romantic, and almost without formal schooling, she has been sent into the world to earn her living by her guardian, Aunt Pussy. But her lack of education and worldly experience are no disadvantage to her job at the Society for the Conservation of Ancient Buildings, otherwise known as SCAB.
Inskip Park, which Viola and her boss Giles have been sent to assess, is an unattractive prospect. The roof leaks, the walls drip with damp, the food is terrible and the servants distinctly odd. But while Giles is dismayed, Viola is euphoric. She loves everything about the house, the garden, the covered bridge over the lake - and the peculiarly eccentric Inskip family. And she's particularly attracted to Jeremy, the handsome, lazy and utterly charming son and heir . . .
