Instructed by her guardian to become independent, Viola Otway is eager to discover the world. Young, decorative and without formal schooling she lands a job with a charity for the conservation of old houses. Viola and her boss, Giles, are sent to assess Inskip Park, a huge house with an incredible facade and domes like Brighton Pavilion. Although Giles is dismissive, Biola loves it. She is also attracted to the eccentric Inskip family, and especially to son and heir Jeremy who is handsome, lazy and utterly charming. Determined to save the house, Viola returns to London having made some life-changing decisions. For Jeremy has asked her to marry him and, while she considers herself "practically engaged" to him she is also determined to acquire an education.
