As a favour to the wife of his best friend, sleuth Nick Travers rambles into Memphis seeking a forgotten soul singer named Clyde James. But two other men are looking for James as well, and as Travers uncovers the story, he learns that the past may be looping into the present. A string of hit men, con artists and crime bosses are after the singer also.
The search will ultimately take Travers into the world of the Dixie Mafia, gambling and a governor's race for election with too much at stake. Before long, buried secrets will rise and a forgotten legend will learn his fate.
