Hirsch's rural beat is wide. Daybreak to day's end, dirt roads and dust. Every problem that besets small towns and isolated properties, from unlicensed driving to arson. As someone who does not read a lot of crime, I was surprised by how much this book reeled me in. It follows Paul Hirsch on his rural beat as he deals with cases ranging from online fraud to murder, in the midst of growing extremism in his local area. There were a few storylines and characters that I had deemed unimportant, but I was proven to be very wrong; the way all of Hirsch's cases are woven together is seamless and impressive, leading to a hugely satisfying conclusion.
Hirsch himself was someone I was happy to follow on his long days on the job, as I found him to be an admirable and calming presence in the face of increasingly unbalanced and brutal people. Disher writes with a slow burning intensity that had me needing to know what would happen next and delivers empathetic insight into the lives of the more vulnerable members of our society, which I was not expecting from a crime fiction book.
