4th June 1989.
History sometimes takes place over long periods of time; sometimes it can occur in a single day. This high-drama series looks at those momentous days in the last century when great and terrible things transpired within 24 hours which would leave an impact on the history of the world for decades afterwards.
In China in 1989, thousands of students took to the streets to demonstrate for changes to the rigid way in which their country was governed. Their protests were peaceful and had the support of many ordinary citizens. The main focus of the student protest was Tiananmen Square in the city of Beijing. Here young people danced, sang and read poetry aloud. Then, in the early hours of 4 June, the Chinese government set the troops in.
What was the result of the brutal crackdown? How did the rest of the world react? What was its long-term impact on China as a whole?
