Sheriff Joanna Brady is, as she puts it, "nine and a half months pregnant" and ready to deliver her baby any minute now. She's short-staffed at work, with officers pulled away by the Department of Homeland Security to do border patrol. The last thing she needs are two serious crimes to investigate. The first is murder - the body of an unidentified man is found out in the desert, and all ten of the corpse's fingers have been chopped off. Following the scant clues, Joanna finds out the victim was an ex-con who had served 20 years in prison for the murder of his pregnant wife. Because of an alcoholic blackout, he claimed he didn't remember doing the deed, but he confessed. In his last days, he was following a young woman and photographing her.
Meanwhile, one of Joanna's officers, who is on an unauthorized stakeout, is brutally attacked and left for dead. That case, involving one of their own, becomes the department's first priority, pushing even the murder investigation onto the back burner. Except that Joanna can't let it go. So she straps on a bulletproof vest, survives a shootout, and sets off to see justice done -- at long last.
